Having lupus is a constant balancing act. Things can change drastically from day to day. You might have to cancel plans, ask for a helping hand, or just stay in bed all day. At times, these days come all in a row and you are forced to press pause on a social life. Lying in bed and moping around isn’t the only option. You need to still laugh and get those endorphins flowing. Finding a distraction is what a lot of people with lupus do.
I distract myself in several ways. One of my favorites is watching NFL football. Yesterday was the pinnacle of the football season, the Super Bowl. The New York Giants played the New England Patriots and the Giants won. In my old life, I would have attended a Super Bowl party with friends and even with lupus, if I was feeling better, I’d go to a sports bar. At home, I still enjoy the game, yelling at the players, laughing at the clever commercials, and eating junk food. I’m not sad that I’m not out enjoying the game with others; I am more upset that the NFL season is over.
Another distraction is having a monthly online party. A group of friends get together on the internet and chat. Well, that’s the polite way of describing it. Truly, it’s debauchery at its best. They last a few hours and they cause me pain, because my cheeks hurt from laughing so hard. These parties are some of the best parties I’ve ever attended, online or otherwise.
Accepting my new normal doesn’t mean I can’t laugh, have fun, and be happy. I’ve modified my fun time just like I have with other things in life. It is something I can’t forget to do. I will, for own sanity, make time to enjoy life.
Mission Accomplished: Accepting my new normal, find time to enjoy myself, live a more balanced life.
